Niagara Falls

July 4, 2003

We decided to take the drive from Worcester to just north of Buffalo - just about 450 miles - on a whim. 30 minutes later, we were out the door and on the Mass Pike.

We left about 11 AM and arrived in Ontario at about 5:30 PM. We checked into a dumpy motel and saw the sights.

The Horseshoe Falls are unbelievable in their beauty. The Canadians also do a very good job at maintaining the access to the falls - there's plenty of parking and shuttles if you can't find a place close - and if you're on foot, there's plenty of places to view the falls.

We stayed to watch the nightly fireworks - they set them off every Friday and Saturday during the summer, and since it was Canada, they weren't really July 4th fireworks, but it was an incredible show just the same.

The American Falls were lighted Red, White, and Blue...which looked suspiciously like the French flag, but we passed no comment.

Niagara Falls, NY on the other hand is an economically depressed little city. We found it dirty and devoid the life Niagara Falls, ON seemed to have. The falls are part of a national park in the US and it seemed somewhat restrictive - one had to enter the park to see the falls. We decided against this.

On the way home, we took a meandering road - the Seaway or something or other and basically saw the shores of Lake Ontario for probably close to 75 miles or so.
